- Summary
- After spending her life with her mentally retarded mother and agoraphobic neighbor, twelve-year-old Heidi sets out from Reno, Nevada, to New York to find out who she is
- Summary
- The only family that 13-year-old Heidi has ever known is an unusual one made up of her developmentally disabled mother and their agoraphobic neighbor, Bernadette. (Agoraphobia is a terrible fear of open spaces.) Bernadette ("Bernie") has been taking care of both Heidi and her mother since they showed up in her Reno, Nevada apartment building soon after Heidi was born. But since Heidi's mom only uses 23 different words, neither Heidi nor Bernie really knows where she came from or whether Heidi and she have any other family. When Heidi finds an old camera and the developed film gives her a clue about her mother's past, she strikes out on her own for New York, determined to find her roots. -- Description by Ellen Foreman
